Our Coaching Institute Graduates
Name: David Alan Moore
Your previous job:
For the last 24 years I have been in Occupational Therapy both as an assistant (COTA for 9 yrs) and as a master’s level clinician (MA/OTR for 15 yrs).
What were you doing:
I was a generalist who became a clinical specialist in neurology, gerontology, hand therapy and psych. At one point I was the lead OT and clinical resource over 58 therapists.
When/why did you decide to learn coaching?
The most pressing reason that I decided to make a change was the philosophy that we espoused as therapists was to find what was “wrong’ with our patients, use all of our omniscience and dictate what these people needed to be “fixed”. I’m pretty good at helping people solve their life problems but I really don’t think I have ALL of the answers.
The co-creation aspect of coaching was a perfect evolution from OT for me (and it still satisfies the paradigm that I have always used to explain OT).
What has changed in your life since doing The Coaching Institute?
I have freedom in my daily schedule, I get to pick the people that I want to work with, I can draw on all of my myriad of life experiences to assist people in finding their own solutions-paths-goals-dreams. Most importantly my original mission of altruism is actually better served than when I was an OT. My career is no longer spent bringing people up to the ‘least acceptable level of function’ but partnering with them as they actually reach for untold dreams of optimization in arenas of their choice!
I always had a decent amount of insight and was an accomplished listener (part of the OT training over the years) but now these skills are POLISHED. I no longer am the professional in the position of having the answers that must unwaveringly be followed but more the unbiased observer hearing all of the nuances and offering other ways of viewing that could possibly help someone find their next path. Some of what I have tried briefly to explain sounds a bit far fetched and “out there” but what I’ve seen with my coaching clients is nothing short of amazing.
Any other comments or examples you want to mention regarding how your training at The Coaching Institute has changed/benefited your life and/or career and those around you?
My training at The Coaching Institute has provided me with tools to more effectively coach my clients comprehensively and holistically. I have learned to listen deeply, to connect heart to heart.
If somebody has a question and wants to email you to ask personally – can they?
